Junior Ranger Programs

Overview

The Junior Ranger (JR) program is an exciting way for young people to explore their national forests and grasslands. Here at the Cradle of Forestry we use Forest Service science and practices to encourage girls and boys ages 8 to 12 to enjoy and appreciate nature.

This year we are focusing on SCOUTING! Each Junior Forest Ranger program will focus on either a Scouts of America or Girl Scouts of America Badge. *You do not need to be a registered scout to participate. * Come learn the basics about each topic and earn a badge if you want!

Programs run weekly on Thursdays from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Program costs $5 per child plus optional $3.50 for badge (July 7, 14 and 21 only).

Cost

Junior Ranger – $5 (for each child) There is no discount for a child even with a card. 

Optional badge $3.50 (July 7, 14, 21 only) 

Accompanying Adult (½ price general admission)- $3 

If an accompanying adult is a Cradle passholder, then they get their admission free, but not the child’s. 

Cradle of Forestry Annual Passholders- General Admission Ages 13 and older-Free

*Passholders must present pass in-person during check-in

Event Details

The Junior Ranger (JR) program is an exciting way for young people to explore their national forests and grasslands.  The Cradle of Forestry in America is nestled in the Blue Ridge mountains and is a great place to enjoy nature education, hiking trails, and a day of family fun! Here at the Cradle of Forestry we use Forest Service science and practices to encourage girls and boys ages 8 to 12 to enjoy and appreciate nature.  

This year we are focusing on SCOUTING! Each Junior Ranger program will focus on either a Scouts of America or Girl Scouts of America Badge. *You do not need to be a registered scout to participate. * Come learn the basics about each topic and earn a badge if you want! These programs are great for troops and individuals alike. Come learn about the forest and have fun outdoors! 

Programs run weekly on Thursdays from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Caregivers are not required to attend but are always welcome. Pre-Registration is required. Program costs $5 per child plus optional $3.50 for badge. Program fee includes admission and educational program price. 

Dates and Themes: 

June 30: Leave No Trace Ranger (FIND Outdoors) Participants will learn how they can enjoy public lands and minimize their impacts by practicing the 7 Leave No Trace principles. Children will plan an awesome adventure with some new outdoor skills and will receive a fun planning workbook and sticker! 

July 7: Forestry Merit Badge (Scouts of America) Participants will learn about the role a forester plays in forest management and get to know Pisgah National Forest and it’s trees a bit better. Children will learn tree identification, tree management techniques, and meet an actual forester! 

July 14: Letterboxing Badge (Girl Scouts of America) Participants will learn about letterboxing, an amazing adventure orienteering game played by people all over the world. To play, they’ll follow clues to find a hidden box with special items inside. Children will also make their own personal stamp and letterbox clues. 

July 21: Insect Study Merit Badge (Scouts of America) & Bug Hunt (Girl Scouts of America) Participants will learn about insects and go on a bug hunt in two different habitats. Children will observe insects and learn about their special adaptations.  

July 28: Leave No Trace Ranger (FIND Outdoors) Participants will learn how they can enjoy public lands and minimize their impacts by practicing the 7 Leave No Trace principles. Children will plan an awesome adventure with some new outdoor skills and will receive a fun planning workbook and sticker badge!

Cancellation Policy

Customers will receive a full refund with 48 hours’ notice of cancellation prior to your event.  E-mail cradleprograms@gofindoutdoors.org to cancel or inquire about a cancellation. Please include your booking name & date of program in your e-mail.  

No-shows will be charged the full price. Customers will receive a full or credit in case of operator cancellation due to severe weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
