Human influence versus the Black Bear: the odds are hardly in their favor.

Event Details

Black Bears are essential to the mountains of southeast Appalachia, acting as ecosystem engineers with every step they take. They disperse seeds and plants, move nutrients across the landscape, and opportunistically feed on small critters and insects. Humans are continuing to move into territory shared by black bears, and the importance for safe human-bear interactions is vital. Join the founder and CEO of Appalachia Georgia’s Friends of the Bears, Lt. Gerald Hodge, as he shares with us the many preventative measures we can take to maintain sustainable human-bear interactions. Gerald will share the most effective ways to keep bears at bay from our campsites, while also sharing how we can do our part in protecting the narrowing wilderness in which they live. Through education in both bear safety and advocacy, we can gain a greater appreciation for these incredible animals.
