SPECIAL FEATURE: Regional Author John Ross will present a talk at 11:00 am in the Perkins Room on the French Broad: Old River, New

The French Broad River is among the oldest rivers in the world. For more than 15,000 years its waters have sustained humans. On Saturday, April 13th, at 11 a.m., John E. Ross, award-winning author of Through the Mountains: The French Broad River and Time (UTenn Press), will present a talk at the Cradle of Forestry. He will guide us through the evolution of the river and mountains; eras of habitation by Cherokees and their ancestors; exploitation by European settlers and their descendants; and successful campaigns by groups of citizens to restore, protect, and preserve it.

Trained as a geologist and journalist, the author worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority in the late 1960s on plans to build 14 dams in the upper French Broad and Pigeon watersheds. While a resident of Asheville from 2014 – 2023, he was a member of RiverLink’s board of directors and wrote Through the Mountains and a number of articles for The Laurel of Asheville, Mountain Express, and WNC Magazine. His newest article The French Broad: Old River, New will be published in WNC Magazine’s summer 2024 issue.

Now living in Middleburg, Va., Ross is writing Beyond the Blue Horizon: Virginia’s Great Valley and Ridges, a natural and cultural history of the western third of Virginia to be published by the University of Virginia Press in 2025.

Ross will also be available to autograph his books sold in the Cradle Gift Shop.
