The 35th Annual Living Archaeology Weekend will be on site at the Gladie Visitor Center on Saturday, September 16, 2023 from 10:00 am-5:00 pm.

Program Details

The 35th Annual Living Archaeology Weekend provides American Indian and Pioneer Technology Demonstrations.

Since 1989, Living Archaeology Weekend has provided visitors of all ages a program of high-quality, interactive demonstrations on American Indian and pioneer technologies and lifeways, archaeological methods, and cultural resource preservation. The free event is held in the beautiful Red River Gorge of eastern Kentucky. The Red River Gorge is home to many nationally significant archaeological sites and historic properties.

Demonstrations and Hands-On activities include:
• Atlatl/Spear Throwing
• Textiles & Weaving
• Pumpdrills
• Breaking Hemp
• Native Games
• Pottery Making
• Corn Grinding
• Hide Tanning
• Flintknapping
• Open-Hearth Cooking
• Cattail Weaving
• And More!

Living Archaeology Weekend will happen rain or shine! Unless there is major flooding or lightning, the event will move indoors when it rains. In case of severe weather, visitors should call the Gladie Center for cancellation information (606-663-8100) or check the Living Archaeology Weekend Facebook Page.
