Event Details

Heidi Hunter, of Save Georgia’s Hemlocks, calls our attention to the Eastern Hemlock, a native tree integral to North Georgia’s ecosystem which has been greatly endangered by the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), an invasive insect with no known local, natural predators. These insects have affected hemlocks in all 19 counties of the North Georgia region, a threat which left uncontained will cause major ecosystem shifts in air quality, stream quality and flow, and above all, a significantly vulnerable forest environment.

About the speaker and organization: Heidi Hunter is the Executive Director of Save Georgia’s Hemlocks, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which is a rapidly growing grassroots organization of energetic individuals with diverse backgrounds, interests, ages, and origins, united by a common purpose to save the hemlocks. SGH is characterized by a proactive approach to caring for the environment, a culture of inquiry and independent thinking, appreciation of diversity, respect and transparency in all interactions, creativity and results-oriented hands-on engagement, conservative financial practices, and high ethical standards. For more information and to learn how you can get involved, please visit: Save Georgia’s Hemlocks. And of course, come see us in person at the bald!

Please arrive at least 25-30 minutes early; you will need to use our shuttle service or walk the Summit path to the mountaintop amphitheater!
