Foxfire Night Hike- November 1, 2025

Join us for an evening stroll to the falls in celebration of the bright autumnal palette of a cove forest…

While our summertime foxfire hikes explore the bioluminescent worlds of Orfelia fultoni gnat larvae as well as several species of fireflies, the autumn season at Anna Ruby Falls offers a different kind of glow.

The term “foxfire” refers to the special luminescence given off by some species of fungi, but is often generalized to include bioluminescent plants and animals. This natural phenomenon can be spotted through a variety of organisms throughout seasonal transformations in the Appalachian Mountains, and this fall, we’ll investigate the mysterious glowing world of mushrooms at Anna Ruby Falls. You’ll learn about the science behind bioluminescence and its function in different species of fungi, as well as the integral role they play in our ecosystem. You’ll have a chance to see several fungal species found during the autumn months here in north Georgia while taking in the stunning transformation of color all throughout the forest.

If you are visiting us during the October 25th hike, you’ll have the opportunity to join our partner, Ms. Jenny Brooks, for a spooky story time event following the hike! Ms. Brooks brings her enthusiasm for literature and education on behalf of the Northeast Georgia Regional Library System.

While we all love our furry friends, pets are NOT permitted at this event.
