2022 Adventures

hiking

This adventure begins with a visit to The Cradle of Forestry, where Club members are introduced to the history of Forestry in the United States, rooted right in Pisgah National Forest. After creating their own trail mix and gathering their gear, club member travel by van to a hiking adventure on the Pink Beds Connector Trail. On this adventure, club members are introduced to Leave No Trace (LNT) principle #1 “Plan ahead and Prepare” and #2 “Travel on Durable Surfaces.

horseback riding

Club members begin the day at Sycamore Flats, along the Davidson River. Here, Los Exploradores pack their snacks and lunch, review their maps, check the weather, fill up on water, grab their hammocks, and get their day packs ready before heading to Pisgah Stables for horseback riding. After their ride, they practice LNT principle #3—“Dispose of Waste Properly” by learning about catholes, and cleaning up trash on the trail.

fishing & River exploration

Los Exploradores meet up for a fun, informational session on basic wading, river safety, and investigating our streams for the aquatic life that helps sustain our trout population. Club members also learn about reach and roll casting— and once everybody has a turn to try it on land they go into the private fishing waters to try out their skills. This adventure helps teach LNT principle #4 “Leave What You Find” and #6 “Respect Wildlife.”

Outdoor cooking & Fire building

This adventure has Club members doing all things centered around fire and water! From learning how to build a fire safely and responsibly to using the fire for cooking, Los Exploradores will focus on LNT principle #5 “Minimize Campfire Impact.” We will follow up our campfire by taking a tubing adventure with Headwaters Outfitters.

Mountain Biking & Trail Work

Our adventure begins working with Pisgah Area SORBA to clean up a section of a very popular trail. The Exploradores scraped sediment and trimmed vegetation. The Hub got the group properly fitted with bikes and helmets and after learning how to ride safely and courteously, the Exploradores got to ride the same trail they worked on that morning. This adventure focuses on LNT principle #6 “Respect Wildlife” and #7 “Be Considerate of Other Visitors.”

overnight camping trip

Club members will put all they’ve learned to good use during our overnight camping trip! At the end of the trip, Los Exploradores will have the opportunity to demonstrate and share their Leave No Trace knowledge with their families. Everyone will leave with knowledge of how they can best protect public lands for years to come.
