Time spent at Black Mountain and Briar Bottom campgrounds is time well spent! Located on the South Toe River, campers have a perfect place for swimming, tubing and fly fishing. Take in the incredible scenery of the Southern Appalachians by hiking the Hemlock Nature trail, or take a 5.7 mile hike to the top of Mount Mitchell State Park, the highest peak in North Carolina at 6,684 feet. We’re only an hour from Asheville, NC and only a few hours from Charlotte and Atlanta, GA. Camping in NC can make the perfect weekend getaway or family vacation! Check for Blue Ridge Parkway road closures in the area: Real-Time Road Closures

From Burnsville, NC:
  • Follow 19E through Burnsville
  • Turn right onto Micaville Loop to follow signs for Mt. Mitchell State Park (this is a very small stretch)
  • Turn right onto Highway 80
  • Continue for approximately 9.5 miles (you’ll pass right by Carolina Hemlocks Recreation Area)
  • Turn right onto South Toe River Rd., past the golf resort and condos
  • Continue on this road. It will eventually turn to gravel and follow the river
  • At the gravel road intersection, make a slight turn on the first right
  • You’ll pass a few homes along the river
  • The entrance to the campground will be on your right and over the bridge
From Interstate 40:
  • Take Exit 86 NC-226 towards the town of Marion, NC
  • This will turn into 221. Continue for approximately 6 miles.
  • Turn left onto Highway 70
  • Turn right onto Highway 80/Lake Tahoma Rd.
  • Follow up and over the Blue Ridge Parkway and head down the opposite side
  • After the small community of Busick, look for a left turn onto South Toe River rd.
  • Continue on this road. It will eventually turn to gravel and follow the river
  • At the gravel road intersection, make a slight turn on the first right
  • You’ll pass a few homes along the river
  • The entrance to the campground will be on your right and over the bridge

* 50/30/20 amp service to sites #18 and #25 at Black Mountain Campground
