Black Mountain and Briar Bottom Campgrounds, operated by FIND Outdoors in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, are two neighboring riverside campgrounds in the Appalachian District of Pisgah National Forest. Set along the South Toe River, these North Carolina campgrounds put you at the base of the Black Mountains, with the Blue Ridge Parkway close by and the trailhead to Mount Mitchell State Park within reach, making them a top pick for camping in Pisgah National Forest.
Campers can swim, tube, and fly fish the river, stroll the Hemlock Nature Trail, or take on the 5.7 mile hike to the summit of Mount Mitchell, the highest peak in North Carolina at 6,684 feet. Between the cold, clear water and the big Southern Appalachian views, it’s easy to see why so many people come back year after year.
Both sites are just one hour from Asheville, NC, and only a few hours from Charlotte, NC, and Atlanta, GA, so they work well for a weekend trip, a family vacation, or a quiet escape in the Blue Ridge Mountains. From Asheville, North Carolina, take I-26 west to exit 9 onto 19 east towards Burnsville. Follow 19 to Micaville and turn right onto Highway 80. Continue south approximately 12-14 miles to Mount Mitchell Golf Course. Turn right on South Toe River Road and follow signs to Black Mountain Campground.
