Planning Your Visit
Outdoor access to Brasstown Bald is generally available year-round unless weather, road conditions, maintenance, or other safety concerns require a temporary closure.

Yes. Any commercial, non-profit, or charter entity including summer camps, daycares, and tour companies with more than 10 people in their group are required to provide at least a 90 day lead time prior to the proposed date of the outing or event. Additional entrance fees or programming costs may apply.
Groups fitting this description must submit a request to our “tour or field trip” reservation form.
The recreation fee provides access to Brasstown Bald and its available visitor services. Depending on the season and current operating conditions, these may include the Summit Trail, seasonal shuttle, observation deck, visitor center, natural history exhibits, mountaintop theater, gift shop, picnic areas, and restrooms.
Some facilities and services may be unavailable outside staffed operating hours.
Eligible America the Beautiful Senior, Access, and Military passes are honored for admission at Brasstown Bald. Visitors should bring the physical pass and any required identification.
Most visitors should plan approximately 1.5 to 2 hours for a relaxed visit. This usually allows time to reach the summit by trail or shuttle, enjoy the observation area, explore the exhibits and theater, and browse the gift shop.
Visitors planning to hike additional trails, picnic, attend a program, take photographs, or spend more time at the summit may want to allow several hours.
Yes. The main restrooms are available during staffed operating hours.
Outside regular operating hours, a small non-flush vault toilet is available in a separate building found in the main parking lot.
Yes. The FIND Outdoors gift shop offers Brasstown Bald souvenirs, apparel, books, educational materials, locally or regionally inspired gifts, handcrafted goods, children’s items, snacks, and drinks.
Inventory and product selection may vary by season and availability.
Light snacks and bottled drinks are available in the gift shop. There is no restaurant or meal service on site, so visitors should bring any meals, water, or extra snacks they may need.

Pets, Service Animals, and Visitor Comfort
Yes. Dogs are welcome at Brasstown Bald as long as they are leashed, well behaved, and under control at all times. Dogs are allowed in outdoor areas but are not permitted inside the visitors center, gift shop or restrooms. Visitors are responsible for cleaning up after their pets.
Service animals are permitted in accordance with applicable law. Service animals must remain under the handler’s control.
Visitors should bring comfortable walking shoes, drinking water, weather-appropriate clothing, sun protection, and rain gear when needed.
Because the summit is often cooler and windier than the surrounding areas, bringing an extra layer is recommended. Visitors arriving outside staffed hours should also carry a flashlight or headlamp.
Cell service can be limited or inconsistent around Brasstown Bald and throughout the surrounding national forest. Visitors should save directions, maps, and operating information before traveling into the mountains.
Trails, Mobility, and Outdoor Conditions
Visitors can reach the summit by hiking the paved Summit Trail or taking the seasonal shuttle during staffed operating hours.
The shuttle provides an easier option for visitors who may have difficulty completing the steep walk. Availability can be affected by weather, maintenance, staffing, and other operating conditions.
The Summit Trail is a steep and paved path that is approximately 0.6 miles each way and connects the lower parking and visitor area with the summit observation area.
Although the Summit Trail is paved and relatively short, it is very steep and can feel more challenging than the distance suggests.
Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, bring water, take breaks when needed, and use caution when the pavement is wet, icy, or covered with leaves.
Strollers are allowed, but visitors use them at their own risk. The Summit Trail is paved, but its steep grade can make pushing and controlling a stroller difficult, especially when traveling downhill or when the trail is wet.
Visitors bringing young children should consider the trail conditions, stroller weight, weather, and available shuttle service before beginning the climb.
Outdoor access is available outside staffed operating hours unless the site or access road is closed due to weather or maintenance. The visitor center, gift shop, exhibits, theater, shuttle, and main restrooms will not be available after operating hours. The trail and summit have no artificial lighting, so visitors should carry a flashlight or headlamp and follow all posted after-hours payment and access instructions.
Site Rules and Recreation
No. Visitors should remain on designated trails, observation areas, and other developed visitor spaces. Going off trail can damage plants, disturb wildlife habitat, increase erosion, and create safety concerns on steep mountain terrain.
No. Rocks, plants, flowers, leaves, wood, and other natural or cultural features should remain where they are found. Visitors should avoid collecting items, carving into trees or structures, or otherwise disturbing the landscape. Please follow Leave No Trace principles and leave the area as you found it.
No. Camping is not available within the Brasstown Bald visitor and summit area.
Visitors looking for overnight accommodations can explore nearby national forest campgrounds, state parks, private campgrounds, cabins, and lodging in Hiawassee, Blairsville, and other North Georgia communities.
No. Recreational drone use is not permitted at Brasstown Bald.
This restriction helps protect wildlife, natural resources, visitor safety, and the experience of others at the summit.
Yes. Visitors are welcome to take personal photographs and videos during their visit.
Photography should not block trails, observation areas, shuttle access, exhibits, or other visitor spaces. Please respect staff, other visitors, wildlife, and natural resources.
Commercial, professional, sponsored, or promotional photography and filming may require advance permission or a U.S. Forest Service permit because Brasstown Bald is located on National Forest land.
This may include paid photo sessions, commercial filming, sponsored content, staged productions, projects involving models or props, and requests for special access. Visitors planning this type of activity should contact the U.S. Forest Service and Brasstown Bald staff before arriving.
Smoking and vaping are permitted only within designated areas of the parking area. They are not allowed on the Summit Trail, shuttle, observation area, or inside visitor facilities. Visitors should follow all posted fire restrictions and dispose of smoking materials responsibly.
Wildlife and Safety
Brasstown Bald is surrounded by mountain forest where visitors may encounter black bears, snakes, deer, birds, insects, and other wildlife.
Wildlife should always be viewed from a safe distance and respected.
No. Feeding wildlife is not allowed. Feeding animals can harm their health, change their natural behavior, and create safety concerns for visitors and wildlife.
Stay calm, keep your distance, and give the animal a clear path to move away.
Do not approach, touch, surround, or attempt to feed wildlife. Keep children close and dogs leashed. If an animal remains near a trail, building, or busy visitor area, notify staff when it is safe to do so.

Yes. Hiawassee and Blairsville are the closest communities for food, fuel, lodging, supplies, and other visitor services.
Travel times can vary because the roads surrounding Brasstown Bald are curvy and mountainous. Visitors should allow extra time and avoid relying only on estimated mileage.
Yes. Nearby destinations include Lake Chatuge, Vogel State Park, Helton Creek Falls, Dukes Creek Falls, the Russell–Brasstown National Scenic Byway, and other recreation areas within the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest.
Each destination is managed separately from FIND Outdoors and may have its own fees, hours, parking arrangements, pet rules, road conditions, and seasonal closures.
While camping is not available in the Brasstown Bald summit area, several campgrounds are located throughout the surrounding national forest and North Georgia mountains.
Reservations, fees, facilities, road access, and operating seasons vary. Visitors should check directly with the campground or managing agency before traveling.
