Hours & Season

Cliffside Lake Recreation Area and Van Hook Glade Campground operate seasonally, typically from April through October. Cliffside Lake is a day-use area and is generally open from dawn to dusk during the operating season. Visitors should check current operating dates, hours, reservations, and site updates before planning their trip.

Entry, Camping & Parking

Cliffside Lake Recreation Area is a fee-area day-use site. Day-use visitors should plan to pay the current per-vehicle fee and display their pass as directed. Cliffside Lake day-use access includes opportunities for swimming, fishing, picnicking, short hikes, and time by the lake.

Van Hook Glade Campground is located near Cliffside Lake and requires a separate camping reservation. Campers should reserve and pay for their campsite before arrival through the official reservation system. Campers staying at Van Hook Glade do not need to purchase a separate Cliffside Lake day-use pass during their stay. The Van Hook Glade camping pass includes access to nearby Cliffside Lake day-use recreation, so campers should display their campground parking pass as directed.

Parking is available at both the day-use and campground areas. Visitors should follow posted signs, park only in designated areas, and keep roads, campsites, and access points clear.

How Long to Plan

Day-use visitors to Cliffside Lake may want to plan a few hours to enjoy the lake, picnic areas, swimming area, fishing, and nearby trails. Visitors planning to hike multiple trails, swim, fish, or reserve a picnic shelter may want to allow extra time.

Van Hook Glade is designed for overnight camping, so campers should review check-in and check-out details when making a reservation.

Restrooms & Visitor Services

Cliffside Lake includes day-use facilities such as restrooms, picnic areas, picnic shelters, a bathhouse, lake access, and short hiking trails. Van Hook Glade Campground offers campsites with picnic tables, tent pads, lantern posts, and fire rings with grills. Campground amenities may include flush toilets, showers, and firewood for purchase during the operating season.

Food service and a camp store are not available at the site, so visitors should bring the food, water, and supplies they need for their visit. Campers should review current campground details before arrival, especially if they need water, firewood, or other overnight essentials.

Pets

Dogs are welcome but must be leashed and under control at all times. Visitors are responsible for cleaning up after their pets and making sure they do not disturb other visitors, campers, wildlife, or natural areas.

Pets are not permitted in certain areas, including swimming areas, bathhouses, or other posted locations. Visitors should follow all posted pet rules during their visit.

Lake, Trails & Outdoor Conditions

Cliffside Lake Recreation Area offers short forest trails, lake access, picnic areas, and swimming and fishing opportunities. Trails in the area range from easy to moderate, but visitors should still be prepared for natural outdoor conditions such as roots, rocks, mud, leaves, inclines, steps, narrow sections, and changing surfaces.

Trail and lake conditions can vary based on weather, maintenance, water levels, and seasonal use. Visitors should choose activities that fit their group, wear appropriate footwear, and use caution around the lake, trails, steps, bridges, and wet or uneven surfaces.

Cell Service & Navigation

Cell service may be limited in the mountains around Cliffside Lake, Van Hook Glade, and the Nantahala National Forest. Visitors should save directions, reservation details, maps, and important visitor information before entering the area.
