Our streams keep our forests healthy and provide habitats for much of Georgia’s biodiversity. Discover the many organisms living within them that could not live without them.

Program Details

The Carters Lake dam is the tallest dam east of the Mississippi. It’s no surprise, then, that the organisms living within these pristine waters are vital to maintaining the overall health of our ecosystems. From our favorite trout to fish to smaller macroinvertebrates, many of these animals inform us of potential pollutants in the water just by their presence or absence. Join us for an investigation into the aquatic world, where you’ll use provided investigative tools like fish nets and containers to discover for yourself the many small creatures that make a big impact on our water systems! You’ll even contribute to citizen science by recording field data for Georgia’s Adopt-A-Stream program!

Plan Your Visit

Getting There: Follow signs for the Doll Mountain day use area, which is located just a few minutes from the campground itself. Parking and restroom access are available directly at the site!
Parking: Parking is available at the day use area itself, and picnic areas and restrooms are located on site.
Format & Participation: Drop by anytime between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM to learn more about the many aquatic organisms in our lakes and streams that contribute to the quality of the water running within them, and what better way to learn than by getting in the lake yourself! Fish nets, containers, and organism identification keys will be provided, as well as help from the educator while investigating the underwater world! You don’t necessarily need a swimsuit- shoes you don’t mind getting wet, sunscreen, and water are all recommended for your outing!
Schedule: The event is offered between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM, so feel free to drop by anytime in between!
On-site location: Find the educator at one of our picnic tables to grab your field supplies! You’ll then be directed to ideal spots for your investigation.
