Plan Ahead for Your Visit

Black Mountain Campground and Briar Bottom Campground sit in the shadow of Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak in the eastern U.S., and border the South Toe River. The campground offers 37 primitive campsites and 3 campsites with electric hookups. 

Both sites are operated by FIND Outdoors in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, and are two neighboring riverside campgrounds in the Appalachian District of Pisgah National Forest. 

These two campsites sit along the South Toe River and put you at the base of the Black Mountain, with the trailhead to Mount Mitchell State Park within reach. Campers can swim, tube, and fly fish the river, stroll the Hemlock Nature Trail, or take on the 5.7-mile hike to the summit of Mount Mitchell. 

Camping reservations are managed through Recreation.gov and cannot be made, changed, or canceled by calling or emailing the FIND Outdoors office. Visitors planning an overnight stay are encouraged to reserve their campsite before traveling.

Campsite Reservations

Black Mountain Campground offers standard campsites for tent and RV camping. Reservations can be made online through Recreation.gov or by calling the National Recreation Reservation Service at 877.444.6777.

When reserving, review the individual campsite information carefully. Campsites may vary in size, parking space, equipment limits, river access, and other features. Your Recreation.gov reservation will provide the most current availability and site-specific information for your stay.

Changes, Cancellations & Refunds

Camping and pavilion reservations made through Recreation.gov are subject to Recreation.gov reservation, cancellation, and refund policies. Service fees may apply when making, changing, or canceling a reservation. Refund eligibility can also depend on how far in advance a reservation is canceled.
