This accessibility information is provided to help visitors feel prepared, welcomed, and informed before arriving at Brasstown Bald. Because the recreation area includes indoor visitor facilities, paved trails, steep mountain terrain, and natural outdoor conditions, accessibility may vary by location, weather, maintenance needs, moisture, leaves, debris, and other changing conditions.
Visitor Center and Gift Shop
The visitor center and gift shop can be accessed without using stairs via an accessible route, and the interior is wheelchair accessible. Visitors can speak with staff, review site information, browse the gift shop, and prepare for their time outdoors. Visitors with specific access needs are encouraged to contact the site before arriving for the most current information about facilities, services, and trail conditions.
Parking and Restrooms
Van-accessible parking spaces are available near the entry booth. Restrooms are located near the shuttle stop and include accessible stalls. They are available during visitor-center operating hours and close before the recreation area’s entrance gate, so visitors should plan accordingly near the end of the day.
Shuttle Service
A shuttle runs regularly during operating hours, offering visitors an alternative to hiking the steep 0.6-mile Summit Trail to reach the top. It does not accommodate wheelchairs or other large mobility devices. The last shuttle departs at 4:30 PM, with the final return trip at 5:00 PM.
Elevator
There is an elevator that takes those with mobility needs to the top of the observation deck, though anyone is welcome to use it. The elevator is currently out of order and repairs are underway with the U.S. Forest Service; no reopening date has been set. Visitors can still reach the observation deck via the stairway during this time. The elevator is only open during business hours.
Mobility Assistance
Wheelchairs and other mobility equipment are not provided at Brasstown Bald. Visitors should bring any equipment they may need during their visit.
Wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, and other motorized or non-motorized mobility assistance devices are allowed on the Summit Trail, however, caution is advised as the trail is steep.
Strollers are permitted at the visitor’s own risk. The steep climb and descent can make a stroller difficult to control, particularly when carrying additional weight or when the pavement is wet.
Service Animals and Pets
Service animals are permitted in accordance with applicable law.
Pets are welcome in designated outdoor areas when they are leashed, well behaved, and under control. Pets are not permitted inside the gift shop, visitor center or restrooms. Visitors are responsible for cleaning up after their animals and should keep them away from wildlife and restricted areas.
