Walk or ride the seasonal shuttle to the top, take in 360-degree views from the observation deck, explore the mountain’s natural and cultural history, or enjoy a picnic surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Whether you are stopping for the summit view or spending several hours exploring, Brasstown Bald offers a memorable way to experience the landscape, wildlife, and changing seasons of North Georgia. 

Begin at the Main Parking Area

The main parking area is the starting point for most visits. Here, visitors can pay admission, speak with staff, browse the gift shop and general store, use the restrooms, access the picnic area, board the seasonal summit shuttle, or begin the paved Summit Trail.

Several longer hiking trails also begin near the parking area. Before setting out, review current weather, shuttle information, trail conditions, and available visitor services so you can choose an experience that fits your time and comfort level.

Reach the Summit

Visitors can reach the summit by taking the seasonal shuttle during staffed operating hours or by walking the approximately 0.6-mile paved Summit Trail.

Although the trail is short, it climbs steeply from the parking area to the observation deck. Visitors should take their time, wear comfortable walking shoes, and use caution when the pavement is wet, icy, covered with leaves, or crowded.

The shuttle offers an alternative to walking during regular operations. Service may vary because of weather, maintenance, staffing, or other site conditions, so check current information before arriving.

Last departure to the summit: 4:30 PM | Last return from the summit: 5:00 PM

Visitors relying on the shuttle should plan their time at the summit around the final return shuttle. During busy periods, allow additional time for boarding and follow any instructions provided by staff.

Take in the View from the Observation Deck

The summit observation deck provides 360-degree views across the Southern Appalachian Mountains. On clear days, visitors may be able to see landscapes extending across Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

Interpretive panels around the observation area can help visitors identify surrounding mountains, valleys, lakes, and other visible landmarks. Conditions can change quickly at the summit, and clouds, fog, rain, or snow may limit visibility.

Even when distant views are reduced, the summit offers an opportunity to experience the weather, plant life, and high-elevation environment of Georgia’s tallest mountain.

Explore the Summit Exhibits

Inside the mountaintop visitor center, exhibits introduce the natural and cultural stories of Brasstown Bald and the surrounding region. Visitors can learn about the mountain’s geology, plants, wildlife, weather, seasonal changes, and human history.

The exhibit hall provides context for the landscape visible from the observation deck and helps explain why conditions at the summit can be so different from those in the valleys below.

Families can also ask staff about available scavenger hunts and other self-guided educational activities that encourage visitors to explore the exhibits, observe the summit environment, and learn more throughout their visit.

Watch the Film in the Mountain Top Theater

The Mountain Top Theater presents an educational film about Brasstown Bald and the seasonal changes that shape the mountain throughout the year.

The film provides a useful introduction to the summit’s natural environment and can be especially helpful when clouds or weather limit the outdoor view. Theater access and showtimes may depend on current operating hours and facility availability.

Become a Junior Ranger

Young visitors can ask about Junior Ranger opportunities offered through FIND Outdoors. Activities encourage children to explore public lands, observe the natural world, learn Leave No Trace principles, and think about how their actions affect forests and wildlife.
Brasstown Bald may also offer site-specific activities for older children. Availability, recommended ages, participation details, and any applicable fees may vary, so families should ask staff when they arrive.

Explore the Longer Hiking Trails

Visitors looking for a longer and more demanding mountain experience can explore trails beginning near the Brasstown Bald parking area.
Jack’s Knob Trail, Arkaquah Trail, and Wagon Train Trail travel through natural mountain terrain with roots, rocks, elevation changes, mud, and changing weather conditions. These routes require more preparation than the paved Summit Trail and should not be treated as short extensions of a summit visit.

Before starting, review the complete route, mileage, difficulty, available daylight, weather, and transportation needs. Some trails do not return to the same starting point. Hikers should bring adequate water, food, navigation tools, and weather-appropriate clothing and should not rely on staff for transportation or trail pickups.

Enjoy a Mountain Picnic

Picnic areas are located near the main parking area and offer a place to enjoy a meal before or after visiting the summit. Charcoal grills are available in the designated picnic area at the south end of the parking lot.

Visitors should bring their own food, water, and picnic supplies, use only designated grills, and follow all posted fire restrictions. Food and trash should be secured and disposed of properly to avoid attracting bears and other wildlife.

Look for Wildlife and Seasonal Scenery

The forests surrounding Brasstown Bald provide habitat for birds, bears, deer, snakes, insects, and many other animals. The mountain’s elevation also creates distinctive plant communities and seasonal conditions.

Spring and summer bring fresh mountain greenery and seasonal blooms, fall transforms the surrounding ridges with colorful foliage, and winter may bring frost, ice, or snow to the summit. Binoculars can be useful for observing birds, distant scenery, and wildlife.

Animals should always be viewed from a safe distance. Never approach, feed, follow, or disturb wildlife.

Join a Program or Seasonal Event

FIND Outdoors offers educational programs and seasonal events at Brasstown Bald throughout the year. Depending on the date, visitors may find wildlife presentations, astronomy programs, Junior Ranger activities, cultural and natural-history programs, stewardship events, or other guided experiences.

Some programs are included with admission, while others may require advance registration or an additional ticket. Review the current event calendar before your visit for dates, participation details, and recommended supplies.

Visit the Gift Shop and General Store

Before leaving, stop by the FIND Outdoors gift shop and general store near the main parking area. Visitors can browse Brasstown Bald souvenirs, forest-related merchandise, locally made products, and other items connected to the North Georgia mountains.
The shop also offers ice cream, bottled water, soft drinks, and light snacks for visitors preparing for the summit or returning from the trails. Inventory and product selection may vary by season and availability.
