Know Before You Go
Plan Your Visit
A little planning can help you make the most of your visit to the Cradle of Forestry. Before you arrive, review current hours, admission details, trail conditions, pet guidelines, and visitor services so your group knows what to expect. These quick details can help you plan your time, prepare for the forest setting, and enjoy a smoother visit from arrival to departure.
Hours & Season
The Cradle of Forestry operates seasonally, and regular operating hours are seven days a week, 10:00 AM – 5:00PM. Visitors should check current operating dates, hours, and site updates before planning their trip. Please refer to the official Cradle of Forestry website for the most up to date information.
Entry & Parking
Admission is required and is to be paid when you arrive at the site. No advance purchase is required. Admission includes access to the Discovery Center, interactive exhibits, the site film, paved interpretive trails, historic buildings, and other visitor experiences throughout the Cradle. Convenient parking is available on-site near the Discovery Center.
Designated accessible parking is available near the Discovery Center. The parking area includes four standard accessible parking spaces and one van-accessible parking space.
Please note that any commercial, non-profit, or charter entity including summer camps, daycares, and tour companies with more than 10 people in their group are required to provide at least a 90 day lead time prior to the proposed date of the outing or event. Additional entrance fees or programming costs may apply.
Groups fitting this description must submit a request to our “tour or field trip” reservation form.
Season Pass
Explore more all season long with the Cradle of Forestry Annual Pass! Passholder benefits include 50% off special programs and seasonal events, access to members-only events, free daily admission, and 15% off gift shop and cafe items! Season pass costs include $45 for an individual pass and $65 for a family pass (passholder + 3 additional guests).
Your entry fees & purchases directly support the non-profit mission of FIND Outdoors and the Cradle of Forestry. Revenue and donations support forest education, stewardship, and our vision to create a lasting community of appreciation for the outdoors. Every dollar earned is reinvested into the Cradle of Forestry for educational programming and preservation of this historic site.
How Long to Plan
Most visitors should plan at least 2-3 hours for a relaxed visit. Families, photographers, history enthusiasts, and visitors planning to walk multiple trails may want to allocate around an hour of extra time per trail.
Restrooms & Visitor Services
Restrooms and visitor services are available at the Discovery Center during operating hours. Restrooms are also available at the 1915 Climax logging locomotive. The Discovery Center also includes exhibits, maps, visitor information, and the gift shop. Food service may vary by season, so visitors may want to bring water and snacks, especially if they plan to spend extra time on the trails.
Pets
Dogs are welcome at the Cradle of Forestry as long as they are leashed, well behaved, and under control at all times. Pets may pass through the Discovery Center lobby to access the trails, but they are not permitted in the exhibit hall, movie theater, or gift shop. Visitors are responsible for cleaning up after their pets.
Pets should not be brought to evening or nighttime programs unless the event information specifically allows them.
Trail Surfaces & Accessibility
The Discovery Center building is wheelchair friendly, and the site offers paved walking trails with interpretive exhibits. Visitors should still be prepared for outdoor trail conditions. Because the trails are located in a forest setting, paved surfaces may include natural debris, roots, leaves, rocks, inclines, drops, turns, and changing conditions.
Visitors with mobility questions should review the Accessibility section before arriving.
Cell Service & Digital Tools
Cellular service may be limited in parts of Pisgah National Forest. Downloading directions, maps, and visitor resources before entering the forest is suggested.
