Plan Your Visit

A little planning can help you make the most of your visit to Brasstown Bald Visitor Center & Recreation Area. Before arriving, review current hours, admission details, shuttle operations, mountain weather, trail conditions, and available visitor services. Conditions at Georgia’s highest point can differ significantly from those in surrounding towns, so checking current updates can help your group arrive prepared.

Hours & Season

Public access to Brasstown Bald is available year-round, but staffed visitor services operate seasonally. During the regular visitor-services season, the site is open seven days a week from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

The site is closed the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. Seasonal operations may also be affected by winter weather, road conditions, maintenance, and other temporary closures.

Visitors should check current hours, weather, road conditions, facility availability, and site alerts before traveling.

Entry & Parking

During regular operating hours, admission is paid at the entrance to the designated Brasstown Bald parking area. Regular admission is $10 for visitors ages 16 and older. Children 15 and younger are admitted free.

Visitors arriving outside regular operating hours must pay the $6 after-hours day-use fee for each person ages 16 and older. Payment can be made with cash using the fee envelopes and self-service fee station beside the ticket booth or through the official online day-use pass system. Children 15 and younger remain free.

Certain America the Beautiful passes are accepted for free admission. Visitors should review current pass information before arriving to confirm eligibility and required identification.

Parking is located below the summit near the trailheads, picnic area, gift shop, and shuttle boarding area. Parking can become limited during weekends, holidays, fall color, and special events. Follow posted signs and staff directions when arriving.

Please note that any commercial, non-profit, or charter entity including summer camps, daycares, and tour companies with more than 10 people in their group are required to provide at least a 90 day lead time prior to the proposed date of the outing or event. Additional entrance fees or programming costs may apply.

Groups fitting this description must submit a request to our “tour or field trip” reservation form.

Shuttle Service

During regular operating hours, a shuttle carries visitors between the main parking area and the summit. The shuttle runs regularly throughout the day, except during a scheduled break from 12:30 to 1:10 PM.

The last shuttle to the summit departs at 4:30 PM, and the final return shuttle leaves the summit at 5:00 PM. Visitors should allow enough time to explore the observation deck, exhibits, and theater before the final return trip.

Shuttle operations may be affected by weather, maintenance, staffing, or other site conditions. Shuttle service is not available outside staffed operating hours.

How Long to Plan

Most visitors should plan at least 1.5 to 2 hours for a relaxed visit. This usually allows time to pay admission, travel to the summit by shuttle or trail, explore the observation deck and visitor exhibits, watch the film in the Mountain Top Theater, and return to the parking area.

Visitors who plan to picnic, attend a program, browse the gift shop, take photographs, or hike one of the longer trails should allow additional time.

Restrooms & Visitor Services

Visitor amenities include restrooms, a gift shop and general store, an exhibit hall, the Mountain Top Theater, picnic areas, and the summit observation deck. Availability may vary by season, operating hours, weather, and maintenance needs.

There is no restaurant or meal service at Brasstown Bald. Visitors should bring enough water, food, and snacks for their planned activities, especially when hiking or visiting outside regular operating hours.

Pets

Dogs are permitted at Brasstown Bald but must remain leashed and under control at all times. Visitors are responsible for cleaning up after their animals and preventing them from disturbing wildlife, other visitors, trails, and natural resources.

Service animals are permitted inside visitor facilities in accordance with applicable law.

Summit Trail & Mobility

The paved Summit Trail climbs approximately 0.6 mile from the parking area to the observation deck. Although the trail is short, it is very steep and may be more challenging than the distance suggests.

Visitors should wear comfortable walking shoes and use caution when the pavement is wet, icy, covered with leaves, or crowded. The trail has little to no artificial lighting and should not be treated like a level sidewalk.

Visitors with mobility concerns should review current shuttle and accessibility information before arriving. Elevator availability may be affected by maintenance, and access to portions of the summit facilities may require the use of stairs when the elevator is unavailable.

Longer Hiking Trails

Several longer natural-surface trails begin near the Brasstown Bald parking area, including Jack’s Knob Trail, Arkaquah Trail, and Wagon Train Trail. These routes include changing elevation, roots, rocks, mud, limited services, and more demanding mountain conditions than the paved Summit Trail.
Hikers should review the full route, distance, weather, daylight, transportation needs, and current trail conditions before starting. Some trails do not return to the same trailhead, so do not begin a route without understanding where it ends and how you will return to your vehicle.

Bring adequate water, food, navigation tools, and weather-appropriate clothing. Do not rely on staff to provide transportation or trail pickups.

Visiting Outside Regular Hours

Hikers may visit Brasstown Bald before or after regular operating hours, including before sunrise or after dark. The after-hours day-use fee remains required.

Outside staffed hours, visitors should expect no shuttle service and limited or unavailable indoor facilities. The unlit Summit Trail may be used to reach the outdoor observation deck.

There is little to no artificial lighting throughout the site after dark. Bring a dependable flashlight, remain on designated routes, and prepare for colder temperatures, wind, fog, and rapidly changing mountain weather.

Site Rules & Outdoor Stewardship

To help protect Brasstown Bald and the surrounding national forest, visitors should remain on designated trails, observation areas, and public-use spaces. Do not litter, vandalize natural or built features, disturb wildlife, damage vegetation, or remove rocks, plants, historic items, or other natural materials.

Drones are not permitted anywhere within Brasstown Bald Visitor Center & Recreation Area. Visitors may not launch, land, or operate unmanned aircraft on site.

Smoking and vaping are permitted only within the designated parking area.

Charcoal grills are available in the picnic area at the south end of the main parking lot. Use only designated grills and follow all posted fire restrictions. Never leave a fire or hot charcoal unattended.

Weather & Elevation

Brasstown Bald rises 4,784 feet above sea level, and summit conditions may be colder, windier, cloudier, or wetter than conditions in nearby towns. Fog can reduce visibility, and ice or snow may affect the access road, trails, shuttle operations, and visitor facilities.

Bring weather-appropriate layers even when conditions appear mild at lower elevations. Check the forecast, current site alerts, and Brasstown Bald’s live webcams before making the drive.

During thunderstorms, avoid exposed areas and follow instructions from staff. Scenic views are weather-dependent and cannot be guaranteed.

Brasstown Bald is located within the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, where visitors may encounter bears, snakes, deer, birds, insects, and other wildlife.

Observe animals from a safe distance and never approach, feed, follow, or disturb them. Keep dogs leashed, keep children close, secure food and trash, and notify staff if wildlife is creating a concern near a trail or visitor area.

Cell Service & Navigation

Cellular service can vary throughout the surrounding mountains. Save directions, maps, admission information, and trail details before arriving.
The drive to Brasstown Bald follows steep and winding mountain roads. Allow extra travel time, use caution, and review road and weather conditions before starting your trip.
